What binds our hearts stood out clearly as we became allies to other people’s causes and offered shared experiences of juggling all of the year’s uncertainty. We could no longer look away at social injustices that we may personally find uncomfortable to discuss but that our neighbors may find unbearable to live. When the trappings of our busy lives were moved out of the way, we truly saw the hard work and sacrifices of “essential workers.” We stood outside and clapped or smiled through glass panes and closed doors as ordinary people showed us extraordinary service and care. But rather than focus on the differences that have wedged between us-the masked or unmasked faces, the red or blue political signs-let’s pause to focus on what 2020 has revealed to us about ourselves. What were we blind to that now we can see? 2020 showed us that we each see the world under very different conditions. But what last year has taught us is that we are not all starting from the same place, looking outward at a target that is an equal distance away. 20/20 vision actually speaks to our accurate interpretation of objects 20 feet away. It is about visual acuity-the sharpness of our vision- measured under controlled circumstances. In its true medical definition, 20/20 vision isn’t about being able to see everything around you perfectly.

administration, it is a good time to take a step back and look through a different lens of revelation to understand what 20/20 vision actually means. No wonder last year left us feeling blindsided and shocked. And the first days of 2021 seemed to suggest the darkness wasn’t yet behind us. How ironic! So much of 2020 was improbable to forecast and impossible to see even as we approached.

As the clock struck midnight across the world on January 1, 2020, a first clever…and then quickly cliché… phrase of affirmation emerged: “2020 vision.” Every corporation, meme, preacher and ‘motivational Monday’ social media post spoke about the promise of a year ahead full of clarity. Perfect vision.
